20,000 Leagues Under the Sea
(1954)20,000 Leagues Under the Sea 1954
In 1868, several ships mysteriously sank in the ocean. Rumor has it that these attacks were carried out by a giant sea creature. A warship sent to investigate the source of the incident suffered the same fate, and Professor Pierre Arronax (Paul Lucas), his assistant Conseil (Peter Lorre) and sailor Ned Land (Kirk Douglas) on board were rescued by the submarine. Nemo (James Mason), the strange captain of this high-tech ship called the Nautilus, greets them and informs them about his mission. 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, Walt Disney's most expensive movie to date, was shot on a $5 million budget. Filming took place from January 1954 to June 1954 in Jamaica, the Bahamas, and California. In 1955, the film won Oscars for Best Art Direction, Set Design, and Best Special Effects, and was also nominated for Best Editing.
