In 1938, Nazi Germany invaded Austria and Josef Bartok, a wealthy notary public, was arrested for hiding important information. Imprisoned in a hotel room, Josef stumbles upon a chess book while losing his sanity. He memorizes the book page by page and becomes a master at chess. Freed at last, Josef faces off against the world chess champion on his way to New York, even if he's never played before.
