The film is based on the true story of James Brooke, the Rajah of Sarawak, and Joseph Conrad's novel "Lord Jim", which inspired Rudyard Kipling's story "The Man Who Would Be King".
While Brooke was a soldier in the Bengal Army that sailed to Borneo in 1839, he helped the governor of the Sultan of Brunei suppress a local revolt and paved the way for Sarawak to become his own private kingdom. He was knighted by Queen Victoria before being appointed governor of the Crown Colony of Labuan. Brooke's dynasty lasted three generations and spanned a century.
