Set in 19th century England, the film tells the story of the marriage of a young Euphemia "Effie" Gray to John Ruskin, one of the most famous art historians and critics of the time. An unhappy marriage can bring disappointment and pain over time. One day, Effie, who is modeling for one of her husband's friends, the painter John Everett, falls in love with the painter and begins an affair. With Effie, who decided to separate from her husband at the encouragement of her best friend Elizabeth Eastlake, it was time to face the harsh conservatism of the time. Written and starring the famous actress Emma Thompson, the film is directed by Richard Laxton.
