This time, Sam Mendes brings a love story intertwined with the magic of cinema to the big screen. Written and directed by the master filmmaker, his new film, Empire of Light, tells a love story in the early 1980s centered around an old movie theater in a seaside town in England. The film inhabits The Empire, a nostalgic movie theater like no other today. Hilary, played by Olivia Colman, is a parlor attendant who opens the living room every morning and is trapped in a depressing routine. Michael Ward plays an enthusiastic young man named Stephen, who joins the cast. The unexpected bond formed between the two characters evolves into a love whose future does not seem bright in the light of social pressures and personal traumas.
