Peace in Japan in the 17th century caused the collapse of the warrior clan of the Shogunate, unemploying thousands of samurai and putting them in poverty. The prestigious end of such fate under the law of the samurai is ritual suicide, or seppuku (suicide). Elder Hanshiro Tsugumo (Tatsuya Nakadai) does that in search of admission to the lord's house. There he seeks work at home, but instead learns of the fate of his young son-in-law, who was barbarically forced to perform traditional seppuku in an intolerable way with a dull bamboo blade. In a flashback, the samurai tells the tragic story of his son-in-law and how he was forced to sell his real sword to support his sick wife and children. Tsukumo thus begins a tense confrontation of revenge against the house.
