Sergeant Roger Murtaugh (Danny Glover), an LAPD detective who is considering resigning at the age of 50, begins investigating the murder of the daughter of his banker friend Michael Hunsaker, whom he knew from the Vietnam War. He has a new partner during the investigation. Sergeant Martin Riggs (Mel Gibson) is a suicidal cop after losing his wife in a car accident. As the investigation progresses, clues lead them to a group of Vietnamese-era mercenaries called the Shadow Company. This group, led by General Peter McAllister, distributes and distributes heroin in the Los Angeles area. While investigating a simple murder, our heroes find themselves at war with a group of terrorists trying to kill them.
