In 1977, Harvey Milk was elected to the San Francisco City Council, becoming the first person in the United States to be elected to the highest public office without concealing his homosexuality. His victory wasn't just important for gay rights. He sought a coalition in the political field. For everyone from retirees to union workers, Harvey Milk became the man who changed the meaning of fighting for a just cause and was a hero to all Americans until his death in 1978. Oscar winner Sean Penn once again plays Harvey Milk, directed by Oscar nominee Gus van Sant. Based on the original screenplay by Dustin Lance Black, the film was shot in San Francisco and produced by Oscar winners Dan Jinks and Bruce Cohen. Milk chronicles the eight-year life of Harvey Milk. Turning 40 while living in New York, Milk and her boyfriend Scott Smith (James Franco) move to San Francisco to add meaning to their lives and open a small shop called Castro Camera. The working-class district where the store is located will soon become a stopover for the gays who flock to it from all over the country. Influenced by his beloved Castor neighborhood and the mighty city of San Francisco, Milk soon begins to change, surprising both Scott and himself. He is the defender of equal rights and freedoms for all. And in a time when prejudice and violence against homosexuals is considered normal, Milk has the support of everyone from young to old, gay to heterosexual, thanks to the great love he has for San Francisco and the people of San Francisco.
