Set in 1920, Ewa Cybulski and her sister Magda leave their homeland, Poland, for New York. When they come to an island called Ellis, Ewa's brother unexpectedly falls ill with tuberculosis. Magda is quarantined, and Ewa is left alone from then on and falls prey to Bruno. Bruno, on the other hand, is a woman trafficker and is determined to be successful in this business. Ewa is willing to risk everything to save and reunite her sister. A young woman who begins to act as a prostitute gains confidence with the arrival of Bruno's cousin Orlando, but Bruno's jealousy will lead the two to a deadly path...
