The events take place in 1924 in India, a British colony. Adela Quested, played by Judy Davies, is a stubborn young British woman who is accompanied by her fiancé's mother, Mrs Davies. Moore (Peggy Ashcroft) arrives in India. There he met and befriended D. Aziz (Victor Banerjee). Adela claims that she was attacked by Aziz after she emerged injured from the cave they entered. British authorities force Adela to go to court and almost declare Aziz guilty before she goes to trial. Aziz loses his credibility in the eyes of the British and his own people, even though there is not the slightest evidence of any crime.
