Inspector Jacques Clouzot, known for the Pink Panther case, is inadvertently hired to solve the mystery when Marie Gambbrelli, the servant of wealthy Parisian Benjamin Ballon, is caught holding a gun to her lover's body. Despite all evidence to the contrary, Clouseau is fascinated by the young and beautiful Marie and does not want to see the truth.
