Inspector Jacques Clouzot, known for the Pink Panther case, is inadvertently hired to solve the mystery when Marie Gambbrelli, the servant of wealthy Parisian Benjamin Ballon, is caught holding a gun to her lover's body. Despite all evidence to the contrary, Clouseau is fascinated by the young and beautiful Marie and does not want to see the truth. All the while, Chief Inspector Dreyfus eats himself up and wonders why no one but himself can understand that Clouseau is such a troublemaker and vagrant.
