In 1935, an alcoholic father, a sick mother, and four young children living in one of the cheap rental houses in the Irish immigrant district of Brooklyn find themselves in the New World due to poverty; They cannot stay in America any longer, they return to their homeland in Ireland. As the first and only Irish family to say goodbye to the Statue of Liberty instead of saying hello to the Statue of Liberty, they will struggle to survive in 1930s Ireland, where hunger, unemployment and poverty were rampant.
