Lawrence (Michael Caine) is a polite and domineering socialite, and Freddie (Steve Martin) is just a con man. When Lawrence sees the gem of Freddie's fraud, he tries to drive him away, but Freddie doesn't get away from him. Later, Lawrence begins lecturing Freddie about stealing and cheating. However, during the lessons, competition arises between them. They finally made a bet that they would get $50,000 from a lady they saw in the hotel lobby.
