Alcoholic but scary Sheriff JP Harra (Robert Mitchum) joins forces with his friend Cole Thornton (John Wayne), a former sheriff. An elderly Bull native (Arthur Hunnicutt) and a Mississippi player (James Caan) join the team. Modi (Charlene Holt), JP Harr's girlfriend, Cole Thornton's ex-girlfriend. A water fight breaks out between the two farm owners. After the Civil War, Bart Jason (Edward Asner) shows up with a bag of money of unknown origin and grows fast. They need more water to grow their business. So he was thirsty for water on a farm owned by Kevin McDonald (Armstrong RG). MacDonald, who settled in the area nearly 20 years ago and farms and cultivates the land despite wolves and Indians, resists Jason, along with his four sons and daughters. The sheriff and his crew help McDonald try to steal his water.
