Hattie, portrayed by Susan Sarandon, is a character known for her beauty and success as a prostitute. She has fully adapted to the lifestyle of the brothel where she works, making this profession an integral part of her life. Hattie cannot even imagine a separate life apart from this.
Hattie's life changes when she gives birth to her first child. Her daughter, named Violet, grows up in the colorful and entertaining yet morally challenging environment of the brothel. Hattie believes that in order to provide a good future for her daughter, she must first marry her off to a man, so she introduces Violet to strangers as her sister.
Violet tries to emulate her mother, striving to become like her. However, one day, when Hattie marries and leaves town, Violet feels abandoned and alone. As Violet tries to find her own path in her mother's absence, she is forced to confront the hardships she faces.
