Early widowed Cesira's clerk leaves Rome to go to her village with her beloved young daughter Rosetta to survive the 1943 bombing. During his village tours and on his way back to Rome after the arrival of the Allies, he tries his best to protect his daughter, but fails. Based on a novel by Moravia, Two Women proved Sophia Loren's acting talent. For this film, Lauren won the Academy Award, Cannes, and BAFTA (1961) for Best Actress, and the film also won the 1961 New York Critics' Award for Best Foreign Language Film and the 1962 Golden Globe.
